The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams is the second book of the cozy Secret, Book, Scone Society mystery series While the characters were introduced in the first book each book does contain it s own mystery to be solved so it would be possible to understand without having read the first although some character development will be missing by skipping ahead. The Secret, Book, Scone Society mystery series takes place in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, a small town that is known to be a place of healing Not only is there a natural hot springs and renowned spa available but many of the shopkeepers in town have their own signature way of healing visitors Nora Pennington is one of those shopkeepers being the owner of Miracle Books where she considers herself a bit of a bibliotherapist being able to talk with a customer and since which book would help them with their own problems.Nora and three other shopkeepers, Hester, June and Estella, have teamed up to form the Secret, Book, Scone Society and when a young girl, Abilene, crosses their paths the ladies know it s up to them to help her heal However, shortly after Abilene comes into their lives the body of a local woman is found it comes to question if Abilene had anything to do with the murder so Nora and the rest of the ladies do what they can to find out the truth. The Secret, Book, and Scone Society series is as much of a cozy mystery read as it is an emotional one The setting of Miracle Springs gives a whole cast of characters with their own emotional story to tell But along with the healing theme of the books readers will also be pleased with the bookstore setting and mentions of all kinds of book titles and quotes infused in the stories Tie all of this up around a mystery to be solved and it s certainly a unique series to follow.I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. For reviews please visit

The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams is the second book in this series.I was blown away with this story I could feel the pain of each character, whether it was mental anguish or physical pain, the author described the emotions in such detail, that it was easy to get caught up in each of their stories.Nora Pennington is a wonderful character Her story is tragic, but teaches her the lessons of life and she experiences each new day with courage. Her friends, Estella, June and Hester are special in their own way, and the ladies all meld and work well together. In this story, we are introduced to Abilene, a young girl who has lived with neglect, torture and pain. Her story is so touching, you will find yourself wanting to reach out and help her as well.Even after I was finished with the book, I found my mind wandering back to the story, to the characters and the ending. This book touched my heart and even though this is a cozy mystery, it brings out many emotions that will leave you with a good feeling.Ellery Adams weaves a tale so realistic, you will feel like you are in Miracle Springs, visiting Hester and June, stopping in to see Estella for a wash and cut, and of course browsing the books in Nora s shop I would definitely order a drink and a book pocket.I volunteered to read and review an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

This was a fun cozy mystery set in Miracle Springs, North Carolina I love the beautiful cover and I think that s one of the reasons I chose this one that and the fact that I m a sucker for cozy mysteries Four of the small town s businesswoment shopkeepers form the Secret, Book Scone Society Nora, Estella, June and Hester They are four close friends who support each other and have already solved at least one mystery together it s not really described in the book, but since this is 2 in the series you know there was a first This mystery involves a young teen, Abilene, who needs help and a murder that happened around the time of her arrival in town My heart went out to Abilene who had a heartbreaking story. The Society s members are strong women who support each other and their community They are interesting characters especially Nora who owns the bookstore and is scarred by fire The theme of healing runs throughout the book. Thanks to Ellery Adams and Kensington Books through Netgalley for an advance copy.

The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams takes place in the imaginary, small North Carolina town of Miracle Springs, a place where people come for healing of mind, body, and spirit The central characters are Nora, Hester, June and Estella who together form the Secret, Books, and Scone Society As the story opens, Nora discovers a young woman who says her name is Abilene, hiding in her bookstore. The book manages to convey a sense of mystic and healing that makes the town a desirable place for tourists who are seeking healing waters at the local springs or solace and renewal within the retail spaces throughout the area Nora s bookstore is one of the central destinations for visitors, where she offers what she calls bibliotherapy for those in need Likewise, Hester offers baked goods with healing properties and June is connected to the local hot springs All four women have secrets of their own that have brought them together to form a friendship and society focused on supporting each other and helping those around them in need.Abilene s appearance is a complete mystery, as she shows up in clothes that are clearly not her own, wearing a hospital bracelet and refusing to talk to Nora or her friends She demonstrates hidden skills in designing a beautiful window display overnight and in baking some unexpected, delicious treats in Hester s bakery Still, most of the women s questions about Abilene go unanswered as other mysteries develop, such as was the woman in the pond a victim of suicide or murder, what does she have to do with Abilene, who are the new business owners who ve moved in to offer consignment selling to the town s residents who have recently experienced financial hardships, and how are they connected to the dead woman s son. This is the second book in the series and initially it felt as thought I was trying to play catch up in terms of the backstory for the four central characters As the book progresses, some of Nora s past and the reasons for her disfiguring burns are revealed as are some details for Hester and Estella It is unclear if this information was fully revealed in the first of the series While the mystery itself is completely self contained and does not require having read the first book in the series, at first there was a feeling of a few missing details As the book continued, this became less important and the current mystery and its resolution became the central focus of the novel. The book was well paced and provided an intriguing description of a town that beckons you to at least visit, if not consider moving there Adams has created an atmosphere that conveys a sense of place that would provide soothing and peace, even in the midst of struggle and pain The three friends are central to this feeling as they seek to heal wounds to the townspeople through anonymous gifts left on doorsteps in the evening along with the books from Nora s shop, delicious treats that delight the taste buds from Hester s bakery. There are multiple threads throughout the novel that tie together into one cohesive story These are well placed and serve to pull the reader through the book at a good pace and at the same time fit together smoothly to form a complex tale. The conclusion of the book is thoroughly satisfying I was intrigued enough to want to read the initial book in the series as well as being interested in following any future adventures of the Secret, Books, and Scones Society There were ample opportunities to solve the mystery itself, if you weren t so lost in the tale you just went along for the ride, as well as a nice, if somewhat predictable twist at the end Overall, this is a series I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a new cozy series. My thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for supplying an advanced digital copy with no requirement for a positive review The opinions stated here are entirely my own.

Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for the ARC.How I would love to visit Miracle Books with its purple chairs, writer inspired beverages, delicious book pastries and pretty shelf enhancers Oh yes, it s the ultimate hangout for booklovers. It is also where the four ladyfriends of the The Secrets, Books and Scones Society gather to solve everyday mysteries and share a snack or two Their next case arrives one day in a hospital dress, a young girl hiding among the books Who is this girl, where does she come from, why doesn t she talk And what about the two deaths that upset the calm of Miracle Springs, are they accidents or related to the girl This cosy murder mystery is a gem, filled with interesting characters, set in gorgeous surroundings, moving at great pace I couldn t put it down I also loved the opening quote at each chapter and all the title recommendations in between In the company of a thousand stories, of a thousand voices, she felt at peace Wow Take that for a comfort scone

Dollycas s ThoughtsSecret, Book, and Scone Society MembersNora, the owner of Miracle Books, tries to heal people woes with a unique set of books she personally selects for them.Hester runs the Gingerbread House bakery Customers tell her a little bit about their lives and what brought them to Miracle Springs Then she bakes them up a comfort scone.June works at the hot springs spa where people come to rejuvenate themselves.Estella is a beautician who tries to help her clients find their true selves.Working together they try to help people, like Abilene, a young woman that has found her way to Nora s shop wearing a dress that is way to big for her, a hospital ID bracelet and visible bruises The ladies try to take her under their wing by offering a job and finding her a place to stay Abilene has secrets and she is nowhere close to being reading to share them Nora has a feeling one of her secrets connects her to a woman found dead from an apparent suicide. There is also a new business in Miracle Springs A business that helps customers sell their collectibles and other goods online The grand opening had people lined up and down the street The shop seems to be on the up and up but Nora is keeping an eye on the place She doesn t have a lot of confidence in the new sheriff, and she has no trouble barging into any of his investigations, especially after another body is found. As in the first book another victim of an apparent suicide until The Secret, Book, and Scone Society digs deeper Until my son took his life I never realized how many deaths in mysteries are first categorized as probable suicides Each time I come across this now in a book I have to pause and tell myself that 99% of the time, that is not the case and to keep reading I don t want to spoil anything but the woman did not take her own life In fact, what unfolds is a well plotted mystery that tangles around and around and around again before the real culprit becomes clear And again, like in the first book, the wonderful core characters of The Secret, Book, and Scone Society grow and learn about themselves in the process.I love the compassion these women have for almost everyone they meet People in Miracle Springs are struggling due to the poor economy and immediately they try to do something to help They have come up with a nice little idea to help some folks a bit Also, the way they opened their hearts to a complete stranger in Abilene was so telling and heartwarming These are flawed characters, with their own issues, yet they can set them aside for others in need.Miracle Springs sounds like a perfect place to visit A town based on healing the body, soul, and mind It also a perfect place to set a cozy mystery series because there is always a new batch of people coming to town Our family s best vacation ever was to North Carolina, days spent by the ocean had their own healing effect, so I can totally understand why Ms Adams has chosen this locale for this story and others.Another great read from this author It can be read all on its own too

An excellent story As this superb murder mystery begins to unfold, it s completely absorbing and hard to put down The mystery is awesome Clue after clue is revealed until all the connections are made and readers can understand who all the players are and why they acted as they did. What captures my attention in this story as it did in the first story is the generosity of giving that each woman in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society cultivates Through books, baking, knitting, etc., they all reveal their inner spirits and help each other and those they come across enduring hard situations. The cast of characters is diverse and savvy Many emotions are experienced during the storytelling This novel can stand alone, however, I believe it is enjoyable if you ve read book 1 first and are familiar with the protagonist, Nora, and the other prominent characters I highly recommend the Secret, Book, and Scone Society cozy mystery series. Thanks to the author for a galley arc This review is my honest opinion.
